Helga Hufflepuff Fanfic100: 23/100
Title: Idea
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: All four Founders
Prompt: #1 Beginnings
Word Count: 100
Rating: G
Summary: Hey, what a concept.

"Accidental magic again!" Godric shook his head in despair. "I hate to say it, but I'm beginning to see why Muggles find their magical offspring unnerving. I wish we could collect them all for a few years and get things sorted out."

"Not practical," Salazar said. "For any number of reasons. Before you glare at me, let me point out most wizards quail at the idea of multiple apprentices."

"So," Helga said, "we should start a school, but put it somewhere out of the way?"

They all stared, and then Rowena kissed her soundly on the cheek. "Helga, you're brilliant."

Sean Stewart
I picked up another Sean Stewart book at the library the other day. I barely started it before going in to lab today, but based on the book so far and a small selection of his other work, I have three thoughts on this.

1. I really wish he would write more Star Wars stuff.

I understand they claim to have asked him and he said he was too busy with his own stories; I can't blame him really, and at least saying they asked him is evidence that LFL has a certain amount of sense and my EU tastes are not wholly out of favor there, not a hypothesis consistently supported by all their author decisions.

2. He's much grittier, or more overtly gritty, in his other work. At least the ones I've read. Unlike certain people, I don't think he talks down to the reader in Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, but he did tone down some things a lot, and I'm not sure to what degree that was for the sake of younger readers vs. for the sake of the general feel of Star Wars.

3. The man does love his flashback scenes.

TFN Archive Seeking Reviewers
The Star Wars fanfic archive at TheForce.net is looking for more staff. Specifically, for more of the reviewers who examine fics to decide whether they're appropriate for inclusion in the archive. If you want to apply, you have to sign up for an account at that site (the archive specifically; the forums are separate accounts) so the application link will show up.

They're hoping to add somewhere between one and four people by the end of August.

If you want more information, feel free to comment or email.

I need to wind my diurnal clock.
We (lab people) made it to Berlin for the conference without problems. I was half expecting to get shunted all over the airport when I first saw that the flight ahead of us at our gate was way delayed, but they moved the other flight instead.

The meetings are going pretty well so far. I gave my presentation (not one of the big ones, just a quick talk in a more informal setting), and people were interested and asked good questions.

The air conditioning at the hotel is broken. Actually, what they told me when I asked about it was that that the air conditioner had been in an accident on the Autobahn. I am not entirely sure what it was doing there, although the hotel is having some construction. I hope the driver is okay.

It's really not that bad; it's cooler than back home. It's just not the usual over-air-conditioned conference (apparently this keeps most people awake; it makes me want to curl up in a ball and nap) that I was prepared for. Starting this evening, though, talks are no longer at the hotel, so who knows what it'll be like there.

Red Cross Classes
Yesterday, I got around to something I've felt like I probably ought to do for a while: I went to be taught CPR. For the sake of efficiency, I signed up for the one that covered adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator and some basic first aid.

My health classes actually did cover quite a bit of it, but I didn't remember most of it enough to do anybody any good. (You're supposed to review it every so often anyway, and my last health class was about twelve years ago.) I know I was introduced to an AED once before, but I'm not sure when.

Hopefully if this ever comes up I will actually remember it at the time.

I think this afternoon I might go visit the animal shelter. We're probably not going to get any pets until we're out of apartments, but the shelter people assured me it's okay to just visit. For all I know this is like bookstores that let you read: they figure enough of the sort of people who would come hang out there will eventually take something home! And, yes, I am knowingly putting myself in the way of temptation. My mind seems to keep angling lately toward things like buying a house, getting a pet, and maybe even having a baby. Er, not all at once, but still. What I should really do first is focus on figuring out my next career step, which will affect how much we're likely to move around the country in the next few years. If I feel compelled to take on new caretaking responsibilities, there's always a nice houseplant.

Visits are still good. Maybe I can be a little less staticky this time. There was this one cat I was trying to pet last time I was there, and I think after stroking his fur a bit I accidentally shocked his ears!

Happiness is a warm puppy. Oh yes.
Today, I...

Okay, strike that. Yesterday, technically.

I was out walking and feeling a little bit discouraged (no major reason, just feeling daunted by my to-do list), when I saw a cute puppy. He was not a tiny puppy -- I'm pretty sure he's at least largely a breed I should have recognized, and it's at least medium-sized; he was bigger than some full-grown dogs of the really little breeds. But he was a most puppyish puppy, kind of rounded and all fuzzy.

His owner very kindly permitted me a short visit and told me the puppy's name w
